THE LIFE

Fosso was born in Kumba, Cameroon, to Nigerian parents and fled to Bangui in the Central African Republic after the Nigerian Civil War. As a young teenager he opened his own portrait studio there, Studio Photo Nationale, and used leftover film to photograph himself. Those self-portraits became an end in themselves, and his later series, such as Tati and African Spirits, cast him in many guises to question identity and history. He became known abroad after winning the first African Photography Encounters in Bamako in 1994.
