WHY THEY MATTER
Leading fashion and portrait photographer for Harper's Bazaar and Vogue; retrospectives at the Metropolitan Museum of Art and the Whitney.
THE LIFE
Avedon made his name in fashion at Harper's Bazaar and later Vogue, bringing movement and emotion to the pages. His portraits, usually against a blank white backdrop, stripped sitters down to face and gesture. His project In the American West portrayed drifters, miners and workers at large scale. He was the first staff photographer of The New Yorker.
