WHY THEY MATTER

Key figure of Mexican modernist photography; her gallery staged the only Mexican exhibition of Frida Kahlo held in Kahlo's lifetime (1953).

THE LIFE

Lola Alvarez Bravo was one of the leading Mexican photographers of the twentieth century. She learned photography alongside her husband Manuel Alvarez Bravo and built her own career after they separated in 1934. Her pictures favour the quiet meanings of everyday life over posed or ideological compositions. Through her Galeria de Arte Contemporaneo she staged in 1953 the only exhibition of her friend Frida Kahlo's work held in Mexico during Kahlo's lifetime.
