WHY THEY MATTER

Among the most prolific Japanese artists, with over 500 books; four of his books appear in Parr and Badger's photobook history.

THE LIFE

Araki studied film and photography at Chiba University and worked at the advertising agency Dentsu, where he met his future wife, the essayist Yoko Aoki. Sentimental Journey recorded their married life, and Winter Journey her last days before she died in 1990. His work often blends eroticism and bondage in a fine-art context, and he has published over 500 books. In 2018 a model who had worked with him for years publicly described exploitative treatment.
