THE LIFE
Adams was born in New Kensington, Pennsylvania, and joined the US Marine Corps in 1951 as a combat photographer in the Korean War. He went on to cover thirteen wars and photograph many celebrities and politicians. On a Saigon street on 1 February 1968 he photographed General Nguyen Ngoc Loan executing the Viet Cong prisoner Nguyen Van Lem, a picture that won the Pulitzer Prize. He said he would rather be known for Boat of No Smiles, his pictures of 48 Vietnamese refugees turned back to sea, which he said did some good.
