WHY THEY MATTER
One of the few photographers included in the Surrealist exhibitions of the 1930s in Paris, New York and London; her photographs of Guernica in progress are a key historical record.
THE LIFE
Maar was a French photographer, painter and poet who worked in the Surrealist circle in Paris. Her photomontages and street pictures of the 1930s, including Portrait of Ubu, became Surrealist icons. She photographed Pablo Picasso painting Guernica in 1937. She later gave up photography to concentrate on painting.
