THE LIFE
Moriyama began as an assistant to Eikoh Hosoe, a co-founder of the cooperative Vivo. His first photobook, Japan: A Photo Theater, appeared in 1968, and he became associated with the magazine Provoke. His pictures of postwar urban Japan use tilted angles, heavy grain, harsh contrast and blur. His 1972 book Farewell Photography tried to take the medium apart, and he received the Hasselblad Award in 2019.
