THE LIFE
Sherman photographs herself in invented roles, but her pictures are not self-portraits in the usual sense. Her Untitled Film Stills, begun in 1977, imitated publicity stills from films that never existed. Later series took on fashion, history portraits, clowns and ageing. The Museum of Modern Art held a major retrospective in 2012.
