WHY THEY MATTER

His portrait of Che Guevara, Guerrillero Heroico, is one of the most famous images of the twentieth century; he was Cuba's leading fashion photographer and Fidel Castro's photographer.

THE LIFE

Korda, born Alberto Diaz Gutierrez in Havana, started out photographing banquets and weddings. In 1956 he co-founded Korda Studios and became Cuba's premier fashion photographer. After the revolution he followed Fidel Castro everywhere, including to the Lincoln Memorial in Washington in April 1959. His 1960 portrait of Che Guevara, Guerrillero Heroico, became one of the best-known photographs ever made.
